Fibro Article in NHS Choices email Newsletter
NHS Choices have recently sent out an email newsletter that features an article on Fibromyalgia. Thanks to Jean Crossley and June Chivers for making us aware of this. Jean says this about the newsletter:
"I think that this is an excellent piece of information to share with your members who you contact electronically as it can be used by people with fibromyalgia as proof that fibromyalgia does exist and is not something they are imagining. The important message from this is that the information is provided in a newsletter produced by the NHS - and one can ask the non believers - why would the NHS be circulating information about something which I am imagining? How would the NHS know exactly what I and another 2-4% of the population are imagining?
Sponsored Walk in Fancy Dress
I decided to do a sponsored walk as my mum, Helen, has been recently been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and I felt I wanted to do something to show my support for her and others with same condition.
I decided I would do a fancy dress walk along our local canal from Skipton to Keighley, and a few friends agreed to join me. We met up on 26th June 2011 at 11.30am and I was really pleased that we had six walkers, including me, Jonathan Connor, Sharon Ward and their dog Ringo, and my god mother Shona Brunshill and her daughter Kirra.
Fibromyalgia Education Programme at Pinderfields Hospital
In 2006 my GP referred me to a new fibromyalgia course which had started at the old Pinderfields Hospital. I was introduced to the course leader, a lovely, cheerful and bright physiotherapist called Sally, and I attribute her and the course with helping me to begin to finally come to terms with the diagnosis I had been given many years before.
At the time of diagnosis I was advised to exercise and take the pills. I did exercise and like so many of us I joined a gym, did too much and then had a flare and took to bed. I repeated that pattern until I met Sally and was shown the correct way to exercise with Fibro. Some of her first ideas seemed a bit lame and I thought ‘What’s the point of that?’ I persevered though and so enjoyed my first session that I couldn't wait to return.

Abseiling for FM

We had a fantastic day and the abseil went really well. We raised over a £1000 for the Northern Ireland fibro group. I had the pleasure of organising it all, but it was my friends Joanne Brown, Paula Scott, Dominic Roncaglione and my sister in law, Barbara Stevenson and husband Simon Hamilton that did it. It was a beautiful sunny day and they all loved helping our cause.

Aberdeen & District Fibromyalgia Support Group
Us up in Aberdeen have had a busy year fundraising awareness and just plain old fun.
Our first big event of the year was we in May held a Jumble sale and awareness day in conjunction with Fibromyalgia Awareness Day. Aberdeen’s Salvation Army kindly let us hire a room. We were overwhelmed with donations and we raised over £200. Thanks again to all those who helped organise everything, made donations and those who helped out on the day.
At our support group meeting in May we had guest speaker Helen Grant, who is an Energy Healer. She came a long and explained what energy healing is and done some demonstrations, which got good feedback. The best thing about Helen is she does not charge her clients but does expect donation which she donates to different charities. As you may be aware that treatments like these can be expensive, so we were delighted to hear this.
PhD Study into FM needs volunteers
Pamela McKay, a Staff Nurse working at a hospital in Scotland, is currently working on a PhD with the University of the West of Scotland. The title of her study is ' An exploratory study into the symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ Myalgic Encephalomeylitis and Fibromyalgia'.
The study has secured ethical approval from the University of the West of Scotland and Pamela has been awarded a scholarship by the Florence Nightingale Foundation in support of her work. Its main aim is to explore and analyse similarities between symptoms associated with CFS/ME and FM. Pamela hopes this will help to "establish an in-depth understanding of the impact these symptoms have on patients."
9 Reasons to Bring Adventure Into Your Life...
Doing a sponsored abseil for a charity is becoming a popular choice for many people, simply because it can raise a lot more cash than a table top sale of cupcakes! However, for quite a few, fear gets in the way and stops them from having a go. This is where Bridie Nelson can really help, because unlike an organised ‘off the peg’ abseil, she can take the time to fully prepare you for the event, well in advance and not just on the big day.
So if you feel that you’d like to give it a go but are too scared, let her be your safety net, your cushion – even if it means that she does an abseil right by your side – once you fully commit to doing it, she won’t let you fail...........Bridie knows all too well the life-changing impact of embarking on an adventure and has written an ebook on the 9 reasons to bring adventure into your life.......
Welcome to the 9 reasons to bring adventure into your life. I found ‘adventure’ (well, abseiling to be precise) at the age of 29. I’d been stuck in an abusive, domineering relationship since I was 19. I was a jam making, cake baking, stay at home mum of two young children and I freely admit that I was slowly going out of my mind.
